95th South Dakota Legislative Session Begins
The 2020 South Dakota Legislative Session began on Tuesday, January 14TH, 2020. Governor Noem delivered her State of the State address emphasizing the benefits of doing business in South Dakota and outlining her plan to aggressively growing the state’s economy.
The legislature is scheduled to meet for 37 days for the 2020 Session. The last day of session is March 30th. There are nine weeks of session this year and the legislature will usually meet 4 days per week (either Tuesday thru Friday or Monday thru Thursday). The final day of regular session is March 12th. The legislature will then recess for two weeks and return on March 30th to consider any gubernatorial vetoes.
Below are the deadlines for legislative action on bills:
Feb 6 | Final day for introduction of individual bills and joint resolutions; |
Feb 7 | Final day for introduction of committee bills and joint resolutions; |
Feb 26 | Last day to move required delivery of bills or resolutions by a committee to the house of origin; |
Feb 27 | Last day to pass bills or joint resolutions by the house of origin; Last day for final introduction of Concurrent/House/Senate resolutions. |
Mar 6 | Last day to move required delivery of bills or resolutions by a committee to the second house; and last day for introduction of commemorations. |
Mar 9 | Last day for a bill or joint resolution to pass both houses; |
Mar 16-27 | Recess; |
Mar 30 | Final day of the legislative session; reserved for consideration of Gubernatorial vetoes. |
